Turkey Trek Virtual 10K Activity Challenge

Presented by HealthCode and Whole Planet Foundation, a Virtual 10K happens on your time, wherever you are, between November 1-30, 2019. All you have to do is travel 10 kilometers (6.2 miles)! Join Whole Planet Foundation and The Greater Austin Black Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, April 18th for a film screening & discussion with Senegalese entrepreneur Magatte Wade. The conversation will be moderated by GABCC President & CEO Tam Hawkins. Tickets to the event include two drink tickets to the bar.

The event will begin at 6:00 PM with check in and brief networking before the film. The bar opens at 6:00 PM.

At 6:30 PM we will move to the Whole Planet Foundation theater for a special screening of Poverty, Inc. About the film:

“The West has made itself the protagonist of development, giving rise to a multi-billion dollar poverty industry. From TOMs Shoes to international adoptions, from solar panels to U.S. food aid, the film challenges each of us to ask the tough question: Could I be part of the problem?”

After the film screening, we will host a discussion with Magatte Wade beginning at 8:00 PM. Magatte is featured in the film Poverty, Inc. and is a serial entrepreneur and advocate for free markets as a way to overcome poverty and the role of enterprise to tackle social issues. She has graced the TED talk stage and been featured on the cover of Forbes Afrique, among countless other accolades. You can learn more about her on her website. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

Magatte Wade
Magatte is featured in the film Poverty, Inc. and is a serial entrepreneur and advocate for free markets as a way to overcome poverty and the role of enterprise to tackle social issues. She has graced the TED talk stage and been featured on the cover of Forbes Afrique, among countless other accolades. You can learn more about her on her website. Tam Hawkins
Tam Hawkins is currently the President and CEO of the Greater Austin Black Chamber of Commerce. Prior to this role, she served as the Vice President of Corporate Engagement & Membership. Her background includes a primary concentration in Corporate Sales & Marketing management roles for some of the nation’s most admired companies. Although well versed in large corporate space, the local commercial real estate entrepreneur is also able to relate to small to medium business owners as well. The Dallas native’s volunteer commitments have been directly in line with her passion for the following local, national, and international organizations: Sickle Cell Disease Association Dallas Chapter, Special Events Chair; Literacy Instructions for Texans – Volunteer Teacher; Airline Ambassadors – United Nations Liaison; Susan G. Komen: Dallas Affiliates Chapter – Fundraising committee and a Mocha Moms Austin former board President. Tam is a board member of Leadership Austin, East Austin Conservancy; a group committed to strengthening the fabric of East Austin by promoting affordable housing and economic diversity. She also serves on Austin Partners in Education and Ronald McDonald House Central Texas boards.

Whole Lotta Yoga is a Yoga Festival offering unique, sampler yoga classes taught by local studios and teachers to encourage everybody to experience yoga, stay active, build new friendships, support our local business community, and raise money for nonprofits, including Whole Planet Foundation.

Sweden: Lessons for America Film Screening

Join Whole Planet Foundation and The Great Listening, with partners The Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce and the World Affairs Council of Austin in Austin for a special screening of Johan Norberg’s “Sweden: Lessons for America?”.

The documentary film, presented in partnership with Free to Choose Media, examines Sweden’s historical and economic evolution from one of the poorest to one of the most prosperous countries in the world. The film questions Americans’ assumptions about Sweden’s “socialist” economy and draws the connection between Sweden’s enhanced quality of life and its attitude towards free-markets. Join us!

Starting at 6:30, we will begin networking and serving delicious Stellar Organics wine. The film screening will begin at 7:00pm. After the film, a round table discussion and Q&A focusing on respectful, democratic dialogue will consider the film’s topic and how economic systems of countries impact poverty around the world.

Texas International Wine Competition People’s Choice Awards

Location: Thirsty Mule Winery

Tickets: Via Texas International Wine Competition. Proceeds benefit Whole Planet Foundation.

Attendees had an opportunity to sample a variety of wines from many different wineries. After a brief education about the wines, guests became the judge and scored their favorite wines alongside a number of Texas International Wine Competition judges. As part of the evening, a spanish-style paella was be paired with excellent wines, door prizes, and wine education.



Dance for Global Goals

Established Austin-based dancer/choreographer Anuradha Naimpally presents an intergenerational dance performance featuring the compelling stories and movements of Asian teen refugees and seniors. Naimpally leads these first-time performers in a powerful dance performance designed to help bring awareness and raise the voices of those who need to be seen, heard, and brought of a darkness into light. Accompanied by singer/songwriter/composer Nagavalli, and guitarist/percussionist Oliver Rajamani.
