Agnes is a microcredit client of Whole Planet Foundation’s United States microfinance partner the International Rescue Committee. Agnes is a refugee from her native Sudan who relocated to San Diego. Her first microloan of $3,000 enabled her to rent the space for her beauty salon and shop. Agnes designs the clothing she sells and she loves to make the designs come to life and sell fashionable items to local women. She says she learned how to be a clothing designer as a young girl making clothes for her dolls. Agnes’ shop is in a frequented area so she added a beauty salon component to attract more customers, and augmented her inventory to include jewelry, purses and wigs. She says it is challenging to be an entrepreneur but she loves the independence and creativity, and has plans for the future if business is good.
