Honduras

Carmen Castillo runs a small store with her mother, Dilcia, in the Caribbean coastal village of Guadalupe, Honduras. She is a client of Adelante Foundation, a Whole Planet Foundation implementing partner. Carmen has used her loans to buy greater quantities of products for her store, decreasing her overhead costs. The recent increase in costs of basic foods, however, has caused her business to suffer greatly. She has had to compensate by raising her prices which is hard on her clientele who depend on these products as staples in their diet. Carmen and her mother work every day of the week from 7am to 7pm, dedicated to growing a profitable business despite this great challenge.

Whole Planet Foundation partners with Adelante Foundation in Honduras in the provinces of Atlántida and Colon, where Whole Foods Market sources bananas and in the province of Choluteca, where Whole Foods Market sources coffee. Adelante Foundation's mission is to improve the standard of living of extremely poor women living in Honduras. Since 1999, Adelante has provided small loans so these women can start and grow their own small business. Over time, the women use their profits to buy better food for their families, improve their homes, buy medicine when necessary, send their children to school, and to plan and save for the future.
